If you’ve been building your business with dreams of making money while you sleep or sipping cocktails on the beach while the Stripe notifications come rolling in, then you and I need to have an honest chat about passive income.
Hi, I’m Tasha Wilson, founder of Hello Self Made, and I was going around in circles because I bought into the whole “set it and forget it” idea.
I figured if I just created a product, automated a funnel, added some emails, the money would start flowing and I’d be free to work less and live more. But it didn’t quite work like that—because honestly, everything you’ve heard about passive income is probably wrong.
Let’s unpack the biggest myths and what actually works instead.
Myth #1: Passive income means no work
I used to think I could launch something once and then just coast.
But after a few months, the sales slowed down, the product felt a bit outdated, and everything just kind of fizzled.
The truth is, passive income isn’t hands-off forever. It’s more like… hands-light—a light touch, but still involved. It still needs your attention, just not your constant attention.
So what do I do instead? I schedule little check-ins every few months to keep things fresh. That might be updating the offer, swapping out outdated examples, or giving the sales page a mini makeover so it speaks to where my audience is at now—not where they were 12 months ago.
It’s not a big deal. It just keeps things alive and actually working.
Myth #2: You need dozens of income streams
There was a phase when I genuinely thought I needed five different offers, a membership, some affiliate income, and maybe a course or two—all running at once.
And guess what? I didn’t grow faster. I just got busier and more overwhelmed.
You don’t need more income streams—you need one solid one that works really well.
What I recommend instead is to pick just one offer and give it your full focus for 90 days. Build it out properly, get feedback, and refine the message. Then optimize the sales process.
Once that’s humming along, then you can layer in something else.
But stacking six half-working offers won’t give you the time, money, or freedom you’re probably chasing.
Myth #3: Passive income is quick money
This one gets so many people stuck.
The idea that you can whip up a product, throw up a funnel, and boom—you’re making thousands by next Tuesday.
And when that doesn’t happen, you feel like there’s something wrong with you.
The truth is, passive income is a long game. It takes time, testing, and tweaks. But once it’s running, it can absolutely pay off big time.
Here’s what helped me shift: Instead of aiming to replace my income in 3 months, I gave myself a 12-month runway. That took the pressure off and let me build something strategic instead of frantic.
And when progress came, it felt solid—not like a fluke.
A Pattern I See in So Many Success Stories
These myths aren’t just little hiccups—they’re major detours that can keep you stuck for months, even years.
I’ve seen so many brilliant business owners juggling multiple offers, trying to do it all, thinking that’s the key to success. But more often, it just leads to exhaustion and stalled growth.
The real shift happens when you simplify—when you stop trying to do everything and put your energy into building one offer that actually works.
And when that clicks? Things start to change fast. I’ve seen people go from totally scattered to confidently bringing in consistent income, simply because they focused and did things properly.
It’s not magic—it’s just the power of intentional, focused effort. And it’s available to you too.
Want to stop spinning your wheels?
These passive income myths are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to things secretly slowing down your business growth.
